Quincy Jones mural in Bremerton part of downtown renovation project

BREMERTON – Passersby on Fourth Street and Washington Avenue during August may have noticed a scissor lift with an artist at the top, painting a four-story parking garage with blocks of bold orange, yellow and pink.

That's KaDavien Baylor, hailing from Shreveport, Louisiana, who pulled inspiration for the mural’s linear structure from Quincy Jones’ sheet music and vibrant signature scarves, and included a portrait of Jones himself at the mural's west end, highlighting the ongoing project for the block, named after the internationally famous musician who got his start in Bremerton.

The Bremerton Arts Commission brought Baylor onto the job, along with two sculptors from California, to commission the art installations that will head up the Quincy Square project. Baylor impressed even the late Bremerton African American history buff Roosevelt Smith with his knowledge of local Black history. Smith remarked that Baylor told him things that some of the committee didn’t even know themselves.

Baylor will be putting the finishing touches on the mural over the next week and plans to host a community paint day on Saturday, August 24 from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. to detail the bottom right corner of the mural.

The sculpture, planned for Fourth Street where it meets Pacific Avenue, is being crafted in California and will be installed at a later date.
