Kenworth announced it will begin production of its Class 8 zero emissions T680 hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), powered by Toyota fuel cell technology. Initial customer deliveries are planned for 2024 with serial production planned in 2025. Kenworth dealers in the United States and Canada are now accepting deposits for the first of these T680 FCEV builds.

Kenworth and Toyota Motor North America, Inc. (Toyota) collaborated closely on developing the T680 FCEV. Kenworth integrated Toyota's latest advancements in hydrogen fuel cell technology into its flagship T680 on-highway truck. The T680 FCEV has a range of up to 450 miles, depending upon driving conditions.

"The T680 FCEV was engineered to offer one of the longest driving ranges of any zero emissions trucks on the market," said Kevin Baney, Kenworth general manager and PACCAR vice president. "With quick refueling, this broadens our zero-emission product offering to include round-the-clock operations in regional haul and demonstrates FCEV potential for long haul."

The truck is equipped with Toyota's 310kW Dual Motor Assembly, capable of providing 415 horsepower continuously at a maximum payload of 82,000 lbs (GCWR), and the Toyota Gen 2 Dual Fuel Cell Module.

Last year, Kenworth and Toyota completed a joint pilot program at the Port of Los Angeles, where Kenworth customers operated 10 prototype T680 FCEVs in a real-world setting. The program's success laid the foundation for Kenworth and Toyota engineers to develop the T680 FCEV that is the focus of the commercialization plans.

Dana Incorporated (NYSE: DAN), a leader in electrification solutions for clean commercial vehicle transportation, announced today an expansion of its Spicer Electrified™ e-Powertrain offerings to include a family of e-Transmissions for a wide variety of medium-duty electric-vehicle applications.

The technology will launch on a global electric vehicle platform in early 2024.

Spicer Electrified Zero-6 e-Transmissions optimize operating range and vehicle performance for applications ideally suited to a central drive e-Propulsion system with a conventional axle and driveshaft layout.

Leveraging Dana's in-house capability for motors, inverters, gearing, clutches, thermal management, and software solutions, the Dana engineering team brings the market a true integrated system. The new e-Transmissions have been engineered to provide the highest level of efficiency and performance with maximum startability, gradeability, and road speed. Other key features include:

Accommodating a gross vehicle weight rating up to 59,500 lbs., the Zero-6 e-Transmission series will be available in two models, the eS4700t and the eS7900t, offering 4,700 and 7,900 Nm of output torque, respectively. The Zero-6 currently holds six patents for advanced design, including a unique shifting method and arrangement, exclusive lubrication methods, and a design for manufacturability. The new e-Transmission accommodates a diverse range of medium-duty applications, such as straight trucks, walk-in vans, refuse trucks, utility trucks, platform trucks, and more.

Dana's Spicer Electrified Zero-6 e-Transmission will be on display at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo, along with the comprehensive Spicer Electrified offering, May 1-4, in Dana's booth, 5621.

Volvo Trucks has announced that it has tripled the number of Certified Electric Vehicle (EV) Dealerships in North America, growing from 12 locations in May 2022 to 36 locations in 19 states in May 2023 with an additional 56 locations in process. Certified EV Dealerships comprise a key cornerstone in the Volvo Trucks electromobility ecosystem which is on display at its booth at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo. To date, Volvo Trucks has delivered 251 VNR Electric trucks from the New River Valley Plant in Dublin, Virginia and continues to lead the shift toward decarbonized freight transportation.

The Volvo Trucks Certified EV Dealership program was designed to ensure the robust sales and service ecosystem required to support customers with the commercial deployment of Class 8 battery-electric trucks. Additional certified locations in three new states – Alabama, Delaware, and Oklahoma – as well as 56 more dealership locations in process were announced during a press event on Tuesday, May 2, at ACT Expo.

Hyundai Motor Company today premiered its new XCIENT Fuel Cell tractor, the commercialized class 8 6×4 fuel cell electric model, for the North American commercial vehicle (CV) market at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo.

The company is exhibiting the XCIENT Fuel Cell tractor and the hydrogen fuel cell system at North America's largest advanced transportation technology and clean fleet event at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California through May 4.

Hyundai Motor Premieres Commercialized Model of Its XCIENT Fuel Cell Tractor and Vision for Hydrogen Mobility in US

Hyundai envisions an integrated hydrogen ecosystem business to achieve carbon neutrality

At Hyundai Motor's press conference, Ken Ramirez, Executive Vice President and Head of Global Commercial Vehicle and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Business at Hyundai Motor, emphasized the importance of achieving carbon neutrality to realize the company's vision of ‘Progress for Humanity.’ He spoke of the company's strong commitment to hydrogen mobility and shared its ambition to foster the development of a clean hydrogen ecosystem.

"We firmly believe that hydrogen is one of the most powerful and pragmatic solutions for achieving our vision of ‘Progress for Humanity’ with emission-free mobility as a fundamental pillar for a sustainable society," said Ramirez. "Our hydrogen fuel cell technology has pioneered the industry, with a real-world proven track record of its efficiency and durability. We are leveraging these merits to further transform transportation with hydrogen energy for a broad range of mobility applications, including commercial vehicles, marine vessels and even air mobility. First launched in 2020, XCIENT Fuel Cell has been deployed in five countries, including Switzerland, Germany, Israel, Korea and New Zealand, and has successfully accumulated over 4 million miles so far. It is the only heavy-duty fuel cell electric model with a proven record of real-world application and technological reliability. The model shown at the event is the 6×4 tractor equipped with two 90 kW hydrogen fuel cell systems (total 180 kW power) and a 350 kW e-motor. Its gross combination weight is a maximum 82,000 lbs and offers a driving range of over 450 miles per charge even when fully loaded.

Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) and Accelera™ by Cummins, Cummins’ zero-emissions technology brand, will showcase a variety of technologies in their booth at Advanced Clean Transportation Expo (May 2 to 4, Anaheim, California). The line-up emphasizes the role that hydrogen will play as part of Destination Zero, Cummins’ strategy to go further, faster to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) and air quality impacts of its products and reach zero emissions by 2050. The company will showcase technologies across the hydrogen value chain, including electrolyzers to produce hydrogen that can power both a hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engine (H2-ICE) concept truck and a fuel cell electric powertrain.

"To fully develop the hydrogen economy, we need to spur demand for hydrogen. We are developing a range of hydrogen solutions and believe H2-ICE powered trucks alongside wider adoption of fuel cell electric vehicles can help encourage development of hydrogen fuel infrastructure. Electrolyzers

The hydrogen ecosystem is underpinned by green hydrogen production. Accelera's electrolyzer technology is enabling the infrastructure scale-up needed to support hydrogen-powered vehicles.

"With industry-leading, highly efficient PEM electrolyzer technology, Accelera is tackling the chicken-and-egg scenario in the hydrogen market by scaling hydrogen production infrastructure solutions in tandem with end-use hydrogen technologies to drive demand and accelerate adoption across the value chain," said Amy Davis, President of Accelera.

An electrolyzer splits water into oxygen and hydrogen, which can be used immediately or stored as a liquid or gas and transported. When powered by renewable electricity, like solar or wind, the hydrogen produced is completely carbon-free. On display at ACT is Accelera's 2.5 megawatt (MW) proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer stack, which is the heart of its large-scale HyLYZER® electrolyzer product line.

X15H Peterbilt Model 579 Concept Truck

Cummins revealed a heavy-duty concept truck featuring the X15H hydrogen internal combustion engine (H2-ICE). The proof-of-concept installation with ratings up to 500 horsepower (372 kW) features a 700-bar pressure 80 kg high-capacity hydrogen storage system. The H2-ICE conversion highlights the opportunity for heavy-duty truck applications to operate on zero-carbon hydrogen fuel with an operating range of more than 500 miles. The hydrogen conversion work is not expected to compromise truck performance, cargo capacity or payload. The substitution of the diesel engine with the 15-liter hydrogen engine and integration with the existing driveline highlights the ability of H2-ICE to offer a zero-carbon solution for fleets to deploy quickly with limited investment.

Technical development work on the H2-ICE concept truck was undertaken by the Cummins team at the Cummins Machine Integration Center at its headquarters in Columbus, Indiana.

The X15H hydrogen engine with up to 1900 foot-pounds torque is an all-new engine platform featuring cutting-edge technology to enhance power density, reduce friction losses and improve thermal efficiency. As a result, performance is equivalent to that of a similar displacement diesel engine and compatible with the same transmissions, drivelines and cooling packages. A further benefit of the X15H is significantly quieter running than a diesel.

"Our hydrogen engines also can help accelerate fleet decarbonization by offering familiar engine technology at a lower cost," said Jim Nebergall, General Manager of Hydrogen Engines.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Engine

Hydrogen fuel cell engines turn hydrogen stored onboard a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) into electricity to power the electric powertrain. This creates efficient, zero-emissions power for demanding applications with longer ranges and harder duty cycles. On display at ACT Expo is Accelera's FCE150 Gen 4 fuel cell engine, powered to go the distance with superior performance and reliability and zero tailpipe emissions. It features increased power density, efficiency and durability with ease of system integration. It is available in 150 kW and 300 kW configurations with the flexibility to decarbonize a range of heavy-duty applications.

Batteries and Electrified Systems

To complete the electric powertrain of an FCEV or a purely battery electric vehicle (BEV), Accelera provides a full portfolio of batteries and electrified products. This includes a range of nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) and lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) technologies, including the BP107E on display.

"We have been innovating battery technology since 2017 and are now showcasing our third-generation design to give our customers the power and reliability they need to decarbonize their fleets," said Davis.

Accelera also provides ePowertrain and traction systems in its electrified portfolio. At ACT, the brand will be debuting its next-gen 14Xe ePowertrain, featuring increased power, peak torque and motor efficiency; the industry's first Hydraulic Disc Brake with integrated parking brake; and an eOptimized Twin Countershaft Transmission for enhanced compatibility with heavy-duty applications – as well as displaying its combination of products that create a complete emissions-free medium-duty chassis.

Nikola Corporation (NASDAQ: NKLA), a global leader in zero-emissions transportation, energy supply and infrastructure solutions, via the HYLA brand, and WattEV, a Long Beach-based developer of charging infrastructure for heavy-duty trucks and provider of electric trucks as a service (TaaS), today announced the upcoming sale and delivery of 14 Nikola Tre battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). The sale is being financed with a long-term lease between Mitsubishi HC Capital America and WattEV.

WattEV is building powerful public charging depots to serve fleets of commercial BEVs. WattEV also provides electric trucks as a service (TaaS) to meet the needs of shippers and fleet operators committed to meeting California's mandates towards zero-emissions. WattEV's first of four charging depots in Southern California will open for service at the Port of Long Beach with access to Interstate 710 and 110 starting in May 2023. Nikola trucks can use the WattEV depots for daily charging.

"WattEV's mission aligns with Nikola's zero-emission vision to address the infrastructure pain point in support of the transition to zero-emissions by placing commercial truck charging solutions at all their depots," said Michael Lohscheller, President and CEO, Nikola Corporation. "We anticipate the availability of WattEV's charging depots will play a significant role in industry adoption and provide customers with immediate zero-emission solutions."

WattEV CEO Salim Youssefzadeh says his company aims to reduce charging times significantly.

"We have been running a pilot test with Nikola battery-electric trucks for the past six months and are quite satisfied with the energy efficiency of the trucks and the ongoing technical support. Nikola's customer-centric approach to meet our requirement for transition from CCS to MCS charging will be a game changer, which will allow us to rapidly expand our fleet size," Youssefzadeh said.

The Combined Charging System (CCS) is the current charging standard for heavy-duty e-trucks, while faster charging systems are under development.

The higher-power Megawatt Charging System (MCS) is expected to become the worldwide standard for fast-charging of medium and heavy-duty commercial vehicles reducing the typical charge sessions to less than 30 minutes.

The Nikola Tre BEV is eligible for the Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP) program funded by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). With this approval, purchasers of the BEV can now qualify for an incentive valued at $120,000 per truck, and up to $150,000 for drayage fleets, helping to reduce the total cost of ownership for any purchaser operating in the state of California.

Launched by CARB in 2009, HVIP is the earliest program in the U.S. to demonstrate the function, flexibility, and effectiveness of a limited pool of first-come first-served incentives that reduce the incremental cost of clean commercial vehicles.

HVIP is administered by CALSTART, a national clean transportation nonprofit consortium, on behalf of CARB. With a range of up to 330 miles, the Nikola Tre BEV is expected to have the longest range among the current HVIP eligible Class 8 tractors. The Tre's cabover design is ideal for metro-regional applications because it has improved visibility and maneuverability, along with a smooth and quiet ride free of the smell of diesel emissions.

Both Nikola (booth #6494) and WattEV (booth #5815) are at the Advanced Clean Transportation Expo May 1-4, 2023, where the Nikola Tre BEV and FCEV are on display and available for the ride and drive portion of the event.

Navistar today announced its newly formed partnership with integrated infrastructure solutions partner Quanta Services, Inc. (Quanta), a leading infrastructure and energy transition solutions provider. Quanta is also the largest specialty electric power grid infrastructure solutions company in North America, providing engineering, construction and maintenance services, as well as power and infrastructure assessment for electric vehicle (EV) charging and related infrastructure. In partnership with Quanta, Navistar will provide International Truck and IC Bus customers with a comprehensive vehicle and charging infrastructure solution that enables fleets to implement battery-electric vehicles quickly and efficiently.

The strategic partnership with Quanta will capitalize on Navistar's three-step approach to delivering fully integrated eMobility solutions to customers: consulting, charging and deployment. Together, Navistar and Quanta will analyze, forecast, plan and execute across customers’ electrification journey.

Luxfer Gas Cylinders, a division of Luxfer Holdings PLC (NYSE: LXFR), a global industrial company innovating niche applications in materials engineering, today announced the introduction of the G-Stor Go H2 hydrogen high-pressure cylinder utilizing Type 4 technology.

Designed with high volumes and lightweighting in mind, this highly engineered cylinder features a polymer liner and is capable of storage pressures up 350 bar (5,000 PSI). The G-Stor Go H2 features a proven boss-to-liner interface that results in minimal permeation and is a certified, cost-effective hydrogen storage solution ideal for fuel cell transit buses, heavy-duty trucks, vans, bulk gas transport, boats, and trains.

REE Automotive Ltd. (Nasdaq: REE), an automotive technology company and provider of electric vehicle (EV) platforms, today revealed P7-C, a Class 4 chassis cab offering a new cabin design built on REE's P7 modular electric platform. The new P7-C is integral to REE's complete vehicle lineup based on its flagship P7 platform, serving vehicles Class 3-5. The P7 vehicle lineup includes the P7-C chassis cab, P7-B box truck, and P7-S stripped chassis. The entire P7 electric truck line-up is powered by the REEcorners™, x-by-wire technology, and is purpose-built to drive down total cost of ownership (TCO). All P7 configurations are currently available to order with initial deliveries slated to begin in Q4 2023.

All vehicles in the P7 program are built for urban environments with market-leading product attributes including optimal maneuverability, increased cargo volume, low step-in height, aerodynamic design, low noise, greater visibility, and increased safety.

The P7-C is a Class 4 chassis cab designed to meet the requirements for the Inflation Reduction Act incentives, which are more substantial for EVs Class 4 and above and meets market demand for the ability to simplify vocational upfits. P7-C was developed based on direct feedback from ongoing customer evaluations of proof-of-concept vehicles and is designed to meet fleet owners’ specific needs.

The configuration* offers a max range of 150 miles, up to 7,000 lbs payload, a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of up to 16,000 lbs, a class-leading 24-inch platform height and 39 ft turning circle. The P7-S allows customers to enjoy total modularity. Whether it's a rearward cabin for a walk-in van configuration or a forward cabin for a delivery truck, the P7-S can accommodate multiple EV specific top-hat designs.
