Route 17 south in East Rutherford NJ closed from debris spill

Oct 30, 2024

A fallen piece of heavy machinery shut down part of Route 17 in East Rutherford for several hours Tuesday morning.

The southbound lanes of the highway were closed and detoured just south of Union Avenue around 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to 511nj.org. The site indicated that an electric scissor lift fell onto the road to cause the backup.

At 9:42 a.m., there was "heavy traffic" on Route 17 stretching to Moonachie Avenue in Wood-Ridge as a result of the debris spill, 511nj reported. The accident caused delays of 10 to 15 minutes.

The road was reopened shortly after noon, East Rutherford Police Chief Dennis Rivelli told NorthJersey.com. There were no injuries stemming from the incident.
